Destination Specialist Julie Gough

Raised in South Africa, Julie worked in the airline industry for 10 years before joining her first specialist Africa tour operator. Nineteen years on and she’s still selling Africa, and as besotted with the continent as ever before.

“I’ve been fortunate to travel extensively across eastern and southern Africa, including multiple trips to Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Madagascar, Mauritius, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.”

“There’s nothing I love more than sharing my knowledge and experience with Lusso’s agent partners.”

  • Favourite destination?

    Namibia

  • Favourite park or reserve?

Namib-Naukluft National Park, the largest conservation area in Africa, home to the giant and wonderfully photogenic sand dunes of Sossusvlei. Either that or Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, home to one of only two populations of mountain gorilla in the world.

  • Favourite lodge or hotel?

I love all the Wolwedans camps and lodges in Namibia. Plus Grootbos Private Nature Reserve in South Africa, a luxurious eco-retreat overlooking Walker Bay between Cape Town and the Garden Route. Then of course there’s &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge in Tanzania, whose breathtaking views across the largest intact caldera in the world are impossible to beat.

  • Fondest memory?

Climbing Dune 45 in Sossusvlei, one of the tallest sand dunes in the world, is certainly up there. After an hour of ‘two steps forward and one step back’, the feeling of accomplishment upon reaching the top was as inspiring as the view – endless undulations of golden-orange sand set against a vivid blue sky. Just as good was my three-day kayaking trip through the lakes and mangroves of Madagascar, where I got up close and personal with the island’s famous lemurs. As for holding the gaze of gorillas in Uganda – there’s a bucket-list moment if ever there was one!

  • Top tip?

Limit what you pack for a light-aircraft flight. All lodges offer a laundry service anyway so it pays to travel light.
