Meet the Africa team

All of our travel advisors have been recruited for their enthusiasm, professionalism and detailed knowledge of the industry. Most have been working in travel for 20 years or more and all regularly return to the destinations and properties within our portfolio, meaning you can be assured of first-hand, in-depth and up-to-date knowledge to pass on to your client.

Senior Travel Advisor Clare Sheldrick

Clare has over 20 years’ experience working in travel, including many years with luxury tour operators specialising in Africa, which saw her road-testing hotels and critiquing safaris from Zambia to South Africa, Zimbabwe to Botswana.

“I love drawing from my own experiences to help agents plan the perfect trip for their clients,” says Clare, whose Africa highlights include racing to keep up with a pack of wild dogs on the hunt in Botswana, and meeting a five-day-old elephant at Abu Camp in the Okavango Delta.

  • Favourite destination?

    Botswana.

  • Favourite park or reserve?

Madikwe Private Game Reserve in South Africa. I’ve enjoyed some of my best ever big cat sightings here, including huge prides of lions and a standoff between two lion brothers. It’s also malaria free so is perfect for first-time family trips.

  • Favourite lodge or hotel?

There really are too many to mention but standouts include Cape Grace on Cape Town’s vibrant V&A Waterfront; Birkenhead House on the cliffs of Hermanus for its breathtaking views; Singita Boulders Lodge in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve for its contemporary stylings and excellent guides; and The Royal Livingstone Victoria Falls in Zambia – so close to the falls you can see the spray soaring skywards from the grounds of the hotel.

  • Fondest memory?

Watching a female leopard and her baby walking through the lodge at Singita Sabi Sands while enjoying a pre-breakfast snack before an early morning game drive. What a start to a day!

  • Top tip?

If you’re planning a trip to Victoria Falls then go in July or August. For me this is the sweet spot. From March to May water levels are so high you can barely see the falls for the spray, while later in the year, when water levels are much lower, they’re not nearly as dramatic. August also marks the start of white-water rafting season.
