With Table Mountain at its back and the ocean at its feet, Cape Town is one of the most beautifully sited cities in the world.
Cape Town is one of the world’s great cities. It’s certainly one of the most beautifully situated. Standing proudly over it is iconic Table Mountain. Whether you hike up or take the cable car, the views from the top – when not obscured by the frequent ‘tablecloth’ of cloud – are simply breathtaking: mountains, the city, the yawning ocean and stretches of unspoiled wilderness as far as the eye can see. To the south of the city is the Cape Peninsula, which eventually tapers out at magnificent Cape Point, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans collide. A wonderful day trip is to venture to the cape via the coast of False Bay, stopping to swim with African penguins at Boulders Beach, then returning to the city via the Atlantic coast and the stunning Chapman’s Peak Drive, ending at Camps Bay for a sundowner cocktail.
For a sense of the city’s history, explore the colourful houses of Bo-Kaap, an historical suburb rich in Cape Malay culture; visit Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years of incarceration; or take a township tour, most of which begin with a visit to the emotionally moving District Six Museum.
Other worthwhile distractions include walking in the beautiful Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens; shopping at Greenmarket Square and all along Long Street; and picking from the parade of restaurants and bars that line the V&A Waterfront, for many the heart and soul of this endearing Mother City.
