Itinerary

Days 1-4

Okavango Delta

Upon arrival in Maun, take a light aircraft flight to a private airstrip in the Khwai Private Reserve, a 200,000-hectare reserve deep in the Okavango Delta. From here it’s just a five-minute drive to Tuludi, an intimate tented camp shaded by leadwood trees and raised on wooden decks, with breathtaking views across the floodplains.

If you’re looking for an iconic delta experience then Tuludi truly delivers, offering morning and afternoon game drives, walking safaris and seasonal mokoro and boating safaris (depending on water levels). All the stars of the safari show are present, including large herds of elephant and buffalo and plenty of big cats. What we really love, though, is that a percentage of all earnings goes straight into a wide range of conservation projects, like helping to support anti-poaching efforts in the Khwai Private Reserve by equipping rangers with motorbikes, radios and the other tools they need to protect migration corridors and species under threat. It’s an excellent example of positive-impact tourism.

Sleep beneath the stars in a Skybed

Whether you’re a thrill seeker, stargazer or simply an old romantic, spending a night in a Skybed is going to appeal. Set deep in the Khwai Private Reserve, overlooking the only permanent waterhole in a 2,000-hectare area, the Skybeds camp comprises three treehouse-style towers, each three storeys high with a bed on the top deck for sleeping out beneath the stars. The experience includes private game drives to and from Tuludi, refreshing sundowners, a tasty dinner around the crackling firepit, and a light, delicious breakfast the following morning.

Days 5-8

Makgadikgadi & Nxai Pan

Marvel at the size and beauty of Botswana as you fly by light aircraft from the world’s largest inland delta to the world’s largest salt pan, the Makgadikgadi Pan. Arid, baked and cracked by the sun for much of the year, its’s one of the most stark and dramatic landscapes you’ll encounter in Africa – a perfect canvas for quad bike safaris and sleeping out beneath the stars. Yet during the wet season from November to April the pans fill up with water, triggering the second largest migration of zebra and wildebeest in Africa (after the Great Migration across Kenya and Tanzania), with roughly 20,000 zebra migrating to the pans from the Central Kalahari.

Upon landing in the Makgadikgadi you’ll transfer to one of the most legendary camps in southern Africa, the wonderful Jack’s Camp. Although completely rebuilt in 2021, the camp pays homage to the old-world glamour of Africa expeditions in the 1940s. Tents are like throwbacks to this entirely different era, with wooden verandas and private plunge pools sitting alongside mahogany furniture, Persian rugs, paraffin lamps and shiny brass fittings. There’s even a Persian tea tent, a natural history exhibit and a 36-seat dining table from the 1820s.

Fly by light aircraft to Maun on day eight to connect with your flight to the UK via Johannesburg.

Jack's Camp

One of Africa's most iconic camps, situated in the heart of the Makgadikgadi salt pans and steeped in 1940s campaign history.

Quad bike across the pans

Other parts of Botswana may have bigger game, but if it’s wilderness, isolation and sheer space you crave then the Makgadikgadi Pan is hard to beat. During the dry season, by far the best way to see it is on a quad-bike safari, riding across its salt-crusted surface on the lookout for ostrich, meerkats and the fossilised remains of ancient aquatic creatures, visible reminders that these otherworldly salt pans were once part of a vast super-lake, formed more than five million years ago.
