One of the Eastern Cape's most highly praised private reserves, known for its conservation efforts, high densities of wildlife and impressive range of luxury accommodation.
A conservation success story, Shamwari is an internationally renowned reserve dedicated to restocking large tracts of reclaimed land with animals that were common in the region before the advent of farmers and big-game hunters. All of the Big Five are present (elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo) and expertly guided game drives mean you'll have a good chance of seeing them over the course of a few days. Our pick of the reserve's numerous accommodation options is Sindile Safari Lodge, a luxurious tented camp offering nine incredibly spacious suites set in deep bush on a ridge, providing excellent views over Bushman's River and the surrounding plains. Each suite features a generous lounge area, fireplace, indoor and outdoor showers, expansive deck and private heated plunge pool.
Also an option is Bayethe Safari Lodge, another superb tented lodge with spectacular views of the African bush, this time offering 12 luxury suites, all with private decks and plunge pools, outdoor showers and cosy fireplaces.
Eagles Crag provides aerial pods with panoramic views of the surrounding cliffs where eagles soar. It offers nine junior suites with private plunge pools and outdoor showers, plus a games room, lounge, bar and spa area.
If you're travelling in a group then Sarili Private Lodge is an excellent option - a sumptuous, exclusive-use, five-bedroom lodge with a deck overlooking the Bushman's River. The pool has a shallow area that's ideal for children and the house comes with its own manager, private chef and ranger.
Those with young children will also love the nine-bedroom Riverdene Family Lodge, where children can engage in a special Kids on Safari programme and facilities include a supervised kids' club, a toddlers' play area and a kids' adventure centre.
Last but by no means least is Long Lee Manor, Shamwari's historic manor house, boasting 17 rooms, one two-bedroom suite, a large rim-flow swimming pool, fitness centre, indoor and outdoor dining options and a boma overlooking a waterhole.
As well as game drives, bush walks, photographic and birding safaris, guests at Shamwari can visit the acclaimed Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, as well as big cat sanctuaries run in partnership with the Born Free Foundation.
Shamwari Private Game Reserve is in the Eastern Cape, a 60-minute road transfer from Port Elizabeth Airport.
