A temple to good taste set on the slopes of the Chyulu Hills, offering everything from day and night game drives to walking safaris, riding safaris, even mountain biking and running safaris.
A member of Relais & Chateaux, ol Donyo Lodge is built into the foothills of the Chyulu Hills between Kenya’s Tsavo and Amboseli national parks, in a 275,000-acre ranch leased from the local Maasai. Built entirely from local materials with advanced water recycling and solar power systems, it's one of Kenya's leading lights when it comes to sustainable tourism, with proceeds directly benefiting the local communities. The six stunning suites and two-bedroom family suite blend contemporary design with the rich culture of the Maasai. All have private pools and decks that look out across the rolling plains to the snow-covered summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. They also boast stunning star beds, allowing guests to sleep out beneath a canopy of stars, listening to the roars of lions and the haunting calls of leopards.
Meals are as good as you'd expect from a Relais & Chateaux property and paired perfectly with wines from the lodge's own cellar. Perhaps most impressive though is the range of activities on offer. Day and night game drives are of course possible, but so too are walking safaris (out onto the plains or up onto the Chyulu Hills), horse riding safaris, mountain bike safaris, running safaris, and watching game up close from a log-pile hide overlooking a waterhole.
ol Donyo Lodge is located in the Chyulu Hills on the Maasai-owned Mbirikani Group Ranch, comprising 275,000 acres of wilderness between Amboseli and Tsavo national parks. There are daily light aircraft flights to ol Donyo Airstrip, which is 30 minutes from the lodge. Charter flights can also be arranged.
