Overview

Located in a private conservancy bordering Amboseli National Park, Elewana Tortilis Camp enjoys dramatic views of the world’s highest free-standing mountain, majestic Mount Kilimanjaro. The camp is nestled under a thicket of umbrella-shaped thorn trees (Acacia Tortilis), from which it gets its name, and is entirely solar powered.

Days are still warm but evenings are cool so layers are recommended. There are also more mosquitoes about. The increased rainfall results in more water sources, which combined with the thicker vegetation makes wildlife viewing more challenging. However, with careful planning this is still an excellent time to visit: the landscape is lush and bright and there is hardly anyone else around. Temperatures are on the rise, days are warm and clear with little chance of rain, though early mornings and evenings can be very chilly. There is also the wind chill to consider when in an open safari vehicle, so layers are recommended. The dry conditions and limited water sources make for excellent game viewing and there are fewer visitors making for a more private safari experience. Many migrant bird species start to arrive from Europe.

    By December the short rains have ended for the most part and the country tends to be sunny and dry, with lush landscapes following the short rains in November. Days are hot and humid, with early mornings and evenings slightly cooler. Wildlife viewing is a bit challenging due to the thicker vegetation. The birdlife is brilliant with many migrant species present.

Location

Elewana Tortilis Camp is located in its own private conservancy, the Kitirua Private Conservancy on the western boundary of Amboseli National Park. There are daily scheduled flights from Nairobi Wilson to Amboseli Airstrip, a 45-minute drive from camp. Charter flights can also be arranged.
