A beautifully styled and romantic lodge, built above the site of George and Joy Adamson’s original Meru camp, where they famously raised the lion cub Elsa, an experienced immortalised in the classic Born Free.
Sculpted into Mughwango Hill, Elsa’s Kopje sits above the site of George and Joy Adamson’s original camp in Meru National Park. It was here, long before conservation became fashionable, that they raised and released orphaned lions, the most famous being Elsa, the lioness of Born Free fame after whom the camp is named. The eco-friendly lodge you see today is one of our favourites in Kenya, offering six rustic yet elegant open-fronted cottages with spectacular views over Meru National Park, traditional thangi roofs and stylish interiors made of local wood and stone. There are also three Honeymoon Suites, two of which have romantic outdoor baths; a new two-bedroom Family Cottage, complete with beautiful living room, large private deck and an outside bath by the master bedroom; and a two-bedroom Private House with a large dining and sitting room, private garden and infinity pool. There's a communal infinity pool overlooking the plains, a massage hut offering excellent treatments and a restaurant serving international dishes with an Italian leaning.
Guests have the whole park to themselves and guides are among the best in the business, their intimate knowledge of the land and its inhabitants providing guests with exceptional game-viewing experiences. Head out in customised 4x4 vehicles through forests, past giant baobabs, and through clear spring-fed streams lined with palms. Settle down to a picnic lunch while exploring the impressive sandy Tana River, spend a day fishing, or visit the park's rhino sanctuary, home to over 70 black and white rhinos.
Elewana Elsa’s Kopje is situated in the wonderfully remote wilderness of Meru National Park. There are daily scheduled flights from Nairobi Wilson Airport to Kinna Airstrip in Meru National Park. The lodge is a 45-minute game drive from the airstrip. Charter flights can be arranged to Mughwango Airstrip which is a five-minute drive from the lodge. A road transfer from Nairobi to Meru takes approximately six hours.
