A beautiful eco-friendly camp on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro, shaded by giant river acacias and open to the comings and goings of the animal world - elephants in particular.
Set in the heart of Kenya’s magnificent Samburu National Reserve, Elephant Watch Camp bursts with character and colour and is one of the best places in the world to observe elephants in the wild. Around 66 families of elephants call the reserve and its surrounding ecosystem home, and the camp's guides know each elephant by name. Bull elephants frequently come into the camp itself, especially after the rains, when they feast on the seedpods that drop onto the roofs of the tents. There are six guest tents in total, each with a king-size bed made from trees felled by elephants, an en-suite bathroom with a bucket shower beneath the stars (steaming hot water, heated naturally by the sun, is provided each night), and a private veranda with a comfortable day bed.
The solar-powered camp is green to its core, with recycling and waste both carefully managed and delicious meals prepared from ingredients sourced locally from the foothills of Mt Kenya or grown on the camp's organic farm in Naivasha. Everything is made fresh, from cold avocado and gazpacho soups to daily-baked focaccia and homemade ice-cream. Picnic breakfasts and lunches are carefully prepared, ready to be unwrapped at just the right moment, like when you settle down to watch a herd of elephants take a bath. At night, hurricane lamps light up the dining table, where mouth-watering grilled meats and fish are served to the soundtrack of the African bush.
Aside from truly unforgettable elephant encounters, activities include up-close lion encounters (through the camp's association with Ewaso Lions, who've been studying the prides that live in Samburu and Buffalo Springs since 2003), camel safaris, walks with Samburu, local village visits and hikes up the scared mountain, Ol Donyo Sapache (Ololokwe). You can even spend a night there in a simple bush camp, waking to witness dawn from its lofty flat-topped summit.
Elephant Watch Camp is located on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in the heart of Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya. There are scheduled flights from Nairobi Wilson Airport to Buffalo Springs Airstrip, from where it is a 40-minute game drive to the lodge. It is also possible to charter a flight. The lodge can also be reached by road, which takes approximately six hours from Nairobi.
