An historic Cape Dutch estate with a boutique hotel, working farm, wonderful winery, farm-to-table restaurants, top-notch spa and magnificent gardens.
Former magazine editor and style guru Karen Roos has taken one of the oldest estates in the Winelands and turned it into one of South Africa’s most stylish hotels. The majority of rooms are in exquisite Garden Cottages with thick whitewashed walls, elegant gables and hearty fireplaces. Newer are the six Fynbos Cottages, which from the front appear finished in the same Cape Dutch style but extend out the back into modern glass cubes that house a kitchen and dining room, affording breathtaking views of the Drakenstein Mountains. Two five-bedroom houses, perfect for families, are available for exclusive use.
A beautiful eight-acre kitchen garden provides much of the food for the three fantastic restaurants. Lunch can be taken picnic-style in the custom-built Greenhouse or enjoyed in the flagship Babel Restaurant, whose dishes reflect the owners' farm-to-fork philosophy of 'pick, clean and serve'. Babel is open for dinner too, though an alternative is to dine in the Bakery, which shuts its bread ovens down at night and transforms into a rustic Italian restaurant, where food is served family-style on large wooden boards.
The relaxing Garden Spa includes a swimming pool created from a restored farm reservoir, while activities range from complimentary garden tours, cellar tours and wine tastings, to bread baking classes, guided fishing trips and rowing on the dam.
Babylonstoren lies in the Drakenstein Valley between Franschhoek and Paarl. It is 45 minutes by road from Cape Town International Airport and Cape Town city centre.
