Crafted from hand-cut Meru stone and inspired partly by the rock-hewn monasteries of Ethiopia, this squat five-bedroom property is clad with rough-hewn rock and capped by grass-covered flat roofs to meld with the landscape. The jagged peaks of Mount Kenya carve up the horizon while the beauty of Borana - with its forested valleys, riverine tracks and grassy savannas - surrounds the house in all directions. Rooms are a medley of rustic African fixtures, earthy colours and occasional European flourishes, like the grand chandeliers seen throughout property. Three bedrooms share a courtyard garden in the main house. Two more are a short walk away and boast floor-to-ceiling windows and expansive terraces.
Wander through the courtyard and you'll find the living area, kitchen, games room and cinema, all linked by stone walkways. Guests are also treated to a terraced pool with inviting day beds and an outdoor bar to grab afternoon drinks. Savour healthy, homemade breakfasts on the terrace overlooking the elephants, enjoy lunch by the pool and picnics in the bush, as well as evening meals served in a variety of settings. Or simply take time out in The Retreat, home to a modern gym and yoga studio, plus an elegant spa.
The house comes with a delightful team of housekeepers, chefs, rangers, guides and spa therapists. And best of all there is no schedule. You're free to do what you want when you want, from game drives and bird watching to horse riding, mountain biking and quad biking.
Set in the Borana Conservancy of northern Kenya, the property is usually accessed by scheduled light aircraft flights into Lewa Airstrip, a 90-minute road transfer from the lodge. It is also possible to charter a flight to Borana Airstrip, just 25 minutes from the lodge.
